Chiefs bizarrely charged for pitch invasion

Chiefs will be called to answer for chaotic scenes at the Danie Craven Stadium ahead of their MTN8 clash against Stellenbosch.

Chiefs bizarrely charged for pitch invasion

Kaizer Chiefs travelled to the Danie Craven Stadium to face Stellenbosch FC in their MTN8 quarterfinal clash last weekend, with Amakhosi clinching a victory on penalties.

The match was originally scheduled to begin at 15:00, but it was delayed due to fan safety concerns as late-arriving fans streamed into the sold out Danie Craven Stadium.

One video clip shows fans forcing their way into the stadium, climbing over barriers and fencing to gain access illegally.

There were also multiple reports of traffic congestion and other crowd issues as around 17 000 fans poured into the arena for the highly anticipated encounter.

Premier Soccer League prosecutor Zola Majavu has now confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs – although they were the away team – have been charged for the pitch invasion.

“I can confirm that charges were preferred against Kaizer Chiefs and they will be appearing before the DC [disciplinary committee] this Thursday to answer to charges of spectator pitch invasion in their match against Stellenbosch FC,” Majavu told journalists, as quoted by SABC Sport.

“Once the DC has been finalised, I will provide you with further details and the outcome therefore – there will be no commentary on this matter until it is finalised.”
