CIT suspects killed in shootout with police in Pietermaritzburg
Two CIT suspects were shot and killed in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Two suspects linked to a cash-in-transit heist were fatally shot in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Netshiunda said the suspects, who were linked to a robbery in Verulam, died during a shootout with police at Nhlazatshe in Edendale in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Netshiunda said the suspects were part of a group of at least 12 people who robbed a cash-in-transit vehicle.
FIREARMS SEIZED FROM THE SCENE
“The suspects brought the cash delivery truck to a standstill and allegedly robbed security guards of their three firearms before fleeing from the scene with an undisclosed amount of money,” Netshiunda said in a statement on Tuesday.
Police responded to intelligence about a suspected hideout in Edendale.
“Two suspects were shot and fatally wounded during the shootout and one suspect narrowly evaded arrest. Police found three firearms, two rifles and a handgun, together with several rounds of ammunition in the possession of the suspects,” he said.
Police also recovered a VW Polo used during the crime. A bakkie with several number plates was found in the garage.
Netshiunda said no police officers were injured during the shootout.
A search for more suspects is ongoing.
