Gurugram police arrest three for illegal betting during a World Cup semi-final

On Thursday evening, police in the Indian city of Gurugram acted on a tip-off and detained three alleged bookmakers. According to investigators, the men were accepting bets on the T20 Cricket World Cup semi-final between India and England. A case has been registered under the Public Gambling Act.

The match was live—and so was the betting

The T20 World Cup semi-final between India and England took place in Mumbai and was broadcast live. It was at that moment, police believe, that the suspects were actively engaged in bookmaking. Bets were being placed alongside the match as it unfolded, which gave the arrest operation particular urgency.

Raid at Ansal Heights residential complex after an anonymous tip

The apartment that became the site of the operation is located in Ansal Heights Society, Sector 81, Gurugram. The raid was carried out by a police team from Kherki Daula police station. The reason for the deployment was information that illegal bets on a cricket match were being accepted from the residence.

The arrests were made while the betting operation was underway

Three men were found directly in the apartment in the process of allegedly running a bookmaking operation on a “live” match. According to police, at the time the team arrived the suspects were actively working with equipment and taking bets.

All three turned out to be residents of Gurugram

The suspects were identified as Rahul, Amit and Paras. All three live in Gurugram. Rahul and Paras are from Sector 91; Amit is from Sector 102.

Eleven phones, three laptops and a TV

During the search, law enforcement officers seized a significant amount of electronics:

  • 11 mobile phones
  • 3 laptops
  • an LED TV
  • a tablet
  • a charger

All items have been seized and entered into evidence.

Investigators zero in on the digital network

According to police, the seized devices may have been used to manage the flow of bets and maintain contact with other participants in the illegal operation. The equipment will be examined in detail to identify financial transactions and uncover contacts leading to a wider network.

Cricket betting is only part of the problem

The popularity of cricket betting is growing alongside the overall rise of the iGaming segment. Expert assessments indicate that the highest growth rates are demonstrated by the mobile segment, particularly live-format gaming apps. To confirm this data, we reached out to the authors of the site about the game Funky Time, which, according to the ratings, is popular in this genre. From them, we received a list of applications that allows you to find the game here. We also learned that the app is equally popular among users of smartphones with different operating systems.

Against the backdrop of the growing popularity of live games and sports, the issue of integrity looks especially acute. For example, a recent NBA scandal called into question the integrity not only of basketball, but also of other sports.

Case registered, investigation continues

An FIR (First Information Report) has been registered at Kherki Daula police station under the Public Gambling Act. Investigators are checking whether the detainees were part of a larger betting syndicate and whether they had accomplices. For now, this question remains open.

Major tournaments as a catalyst for the shadow betting market

Police representatives said monitoring is being stepped up during high-profile cricket tournaments. The illegal betting market is increasingly migrating into the digital space, using mobile devices and online platforms. During such periods, law enforcement agencies intensify surveillance, seeking to stop the activities of underground bookmakers before the money trail disappears online.
