Correct decisions were made – Hlungwani on Chiefs/Downs match

Former FIFA referee Victor ‘The Principal’ Hlungwani has settled debates about controversial moments during the recent match between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.

In the game, Amakhosi scored first through Ranga Chivaviro, but then Lucas Ribeiro and Iqraam Rayners scored for Downs.

Some fans were divided over whether Sundowns’ first goal was offside. Hlungwani dismissed the claims, saying the goal was allowed to stand

“Here we see a ball played by Rivaldo Coetzee. When we draw the line we can see that a leg of Miguel is putting Lucas onside,” he said on Soccerzone.

“We see here Allende is offside, Rayners is offside, but it’s not offence to be in an offside position.

“When the ball is played that the player is from an onside position, he attacks, he crosses, a goal is scored. This goal was scored correctly in line with the laws of game.”

Hlungwani also touched on the last-minute incident, which disallowed Chiefs’s goal.

“We can see Mduduzi(Chabalala) made a cross and Miguel(Inacio) headed the ball and it ended up in the net,” he added.

“But the referee is blowing the whistle for a foul, there is a push inside the penalty area. This whistle came before the ball entered the net.

“The law says ‘a goal is scored when the ball ends up in the back of the net, provided no offence was committed by the team scoring a goal. You cannot use hands, football does not allow to use hands. There was an offence, the push, which the referee blew.

“With the evidence we have, we can support the referee that the right decision was made.”

Hlungwani’s final verdict was that the referee was spot on to allow Downs’ second goal and also to rule out Chiefs’ last-minute goal.
