DA appoints Glynnis Breytenbach as new Chief Whip in parliament

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced the appointment of Glynnis Breytenbach as its new Chief Whip in the National Assembly.

The announcement was made by DA Parliamentary Leader George Michalakis, who described Breytenbach as an experienced parliamentarian well-equipped to guide the party’s legislative strategy.

Experienced Parliamentarian Takes Key Role

Breytenbach brings 12 years of parliamentary experience to the position, alongside decades of service as a senior state prosecutor before entering politics.

As Chief Whip, she will oversee the DA’s management of parliamentary rules and procedures and play a central role in negotiations within Parliament, particularly in the context of the Government of National Unity (GNU).

According to Michalakis, Breytenbach will serve as one of the DA’s chief negotiators in Parliament alongside him.

Safety and Security a Priority

Breytenbach has served throughout her parliamentary tenure as the DA’s spokesperson on justice, a background the party says reflects its emphasis on crime and public safety.

Michalakis said the appointment sends “a clear message” that safety and security remain among the DA’s top priorities in Parliament, aligning with the vision of the party’s federal leader, Geordin Hill-Lewis.

Leadership Team in parliament

In her new role, Breytenbach will work closely with Deputy Chief Whip Bax Nodada and will help oversee the DA’s parliamentary caucus, including:

• 13 National Assembly whips
• 87 National Assembly members
• 12 National Council of Provinces (NCOP) members

Michalakis said he had full confidence in the leadership team, adding that Breytenbach and Nodada would form a “formidable team” in Parliament.

The DA caucus also extended its congratulations and support to Breytenbach as she takes up the influential role.
