Phalatse was ousted after 139 councillors voted for the motion of no confidence against her to be tabled.

DA TO CHALLENGE MPHO PHALATSE OUSTING IN COURT

Commenting on the ousting DA leader, John Steenhuisen accused Speaker, Colleen Makhubele of ignoring the due process entirely and forging ahead to convene a meeting to oust Phalatse.

Steenhuisen said the process to oust Phalatse in the DA-led coalition in Johannesburg was flawed and they are going to challenge it in court.

“After months of efforts to destabilise coalitions across the country, today the ANC succeeded in seizing control of Johannesburg. I warned precisely a few weeks ago that this is what is transpiring in the background. The ANC’s desperation to get their hands on tenders and contracts from Johannesburg’s R76 billion budget is now clear for all to see,” he said.

“Treachery will not stand. Subterfuge will not hold. And we will not succumb to the politics of extortion and blackmail,” Steenhuisen added.

As previously reported Phalatse who filed court papers in a last minute bid to interdict the council sitting was ousted as Executive Mayor through an ANC-sponsored motion of no confidence against her. She lost the vote of motion of no confidence against her after 139 of the 145 councillors who signed the register voted for the motion to be tabled. Members of the DA and the IFP abstained from voting.
