Police arrested a 42-year-old man after his wife alerted authorities, alleging he impersonated an officer and ran a fake jobs scam.

Fake SAPS scam recruiter arrested after wife reports him

Police arrested a 42-year-old man early on Thursday, 12 February 2026, after his wife reported him.

She allegedly discovered his infidelity and raised concerns about his suspected criminal activity.

Officers apprehended him at 04:55. He now faces charges of fraud, perjury, and impersonating a South African Police Service (SAPS) officer.

Alleged fake SAPS job scam

Investigations show the man posed as a SAPS officer and targeted unemployed young people, promising them jobs in exchange for money.

He is expected to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court soon.

The arrest follows a public warning issued on 07 February about a social media scam.

The messages, mainly on WhatsApp, falsely advertised SAPS vacancies in Jeffreys Bay and used the name of a fake police captain.

Police urge vigilance

SAPS commended the public tip that helped secure the arrest.

Officers urged families and communities to report suspicious behaviour, even when it involves people they know.

Police said everyone shares responsibility for preventing crime. They added that information shared in confidence can protect vulnerable people and stop criminal activity.

Members of the public can report anonymously by calling CrimeStop on 08600 10111, visiting a local police station, or using the MySAPSApp.
