Friedrich Merz, 'bulwark against the AfD', to be appointed German chancellor
German lawmakers are set to vote Tuesday on whether conservative leader Friedrich Merz will become the country's 10th chancellor since World War II. "As a bulwark against the AfD, Merz has to work on trying to get towards 2029 in a position where Germans will no longer vote for the far right in such large numbers," said Nick Holdsworth, FRANCE 24 correspondent in Berlin. Merz's portfolio would include the war in Ukraine and the Trump administration’s trade policy on top of domestic issues such as the stagnant economy and the rise of a far right.
