Fuel prices: More pain in store at the pumps
South African motorists are expected to face another increase in fuel prices from next month according to early projections.
Earlier in May, the Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources confirmed significant adjustments to the fuel prices driven by volatile global oil markets.
Petrol shot up by R3.27 per litre, while diesel increase by a sharper R6.19 per litre, marking one of the biggest monthly jumps in recent memory.
Now, despite some hopes that diesel might see some relief, the latest projections suggest that both petrol and diesel users will face substantial increases in June.
Petrol could rise another R2.20 per litre, while motorists may have to fork out at least R2.50 more per litre for diesel.
In April, the National Treasury introduced a temporary R3.00/litre reduction in the General Fuel Levy, but that could expire or begin phasing out on 2 June.
- Petrol: The relief drops from R3.00 to R1.50. This automatically adds R1.50/litre to the June price, regardless of what oil does.
- Diesel: The relief drops from R3.93 to R1.96. This adds R1.97/litre to the June price.
