The funeral of late Queen Elizabeth II is set to take place on Monday 19 September. Here’s how you can watch the state funeral from South Africa. 

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE QUEEN’S FUNERAL 

The funeral of Queen Elizabeth II takes place on Monday 19 September. The late monarch passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday 8 September.

Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral is marked as a bank holiday in the England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The events on Monday will begin with the funeral procession which will see the late Queen’s coffin conveyed from Westminster Hall (where she us lying in state) to the nearby Abbey. According to BBC, The Prince of Wales Prince William and his brother Prince Harry will walk side-by-side behind the late monarch’s coffin during the procession.

The Queen’s coffin will be carried on the gun carriage that was used for the funerals of Edward VII, George V, George VI and Sir Winston Churchill. The gun carriage will be pulled by 142 Royal Navy Sailors. As the service reaches the end, the Last Post will be played, followed by a national two-minute silence.

The state funeral is expected to begin at 11:00 in the UK. So, that is 12:00 SAST and conclude at 13:00 and will be marked by a lament played by the Queen’s piper.

WHO WILL BE ATTENDING THE FUNERAL?

The public will be allowed to follow the funeral progression but only invited guests will be allowed inside the service itself. The funeral will be attended by US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron. As well as royalty, politicians and world leaders and from the Commonwealth of mainly former British colonies, 

  • South African President Cyril Ramaphosa
  • Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
  • Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe 
  • Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama.
