As key stakeholders negotiate, the ICC Champions Trophy 2025’s future is uncertain. Top Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials are engaging in Dubai meetings to complete the tournament framework and resolve crucial issues. The PCB continues to support the fusion concept and urge India to accept it. The fusion concept protects Pakistan’s hosting rights while addressing India’s concerns about playing matches in Pakistan.
This plan would see India play at neutral venues during Pakistan-hosted ICC events. In India-hosted events, Pakistan would play in neutral sites. Progress is being made on the model to break the standoff between the two nations, but no decision has been made. The ICC is anticipated to announce the tournament this week.
In a breakthrough last week, both nations agreed to use the hybrid model for ICC tournaments through 2027. In October 2024, India will host the Women’s ODI World Cup, while in 2026, India and Sri Lanka will co-host the Men’s T20 World Cup.
Pakistan hosting the Champions Trophy 2025 in February is projected to produce significant cash for the PCB. Sources predict $6 million in hosting rights earnings, excluding ticket sales and hospitality. PCB must budget $1.3 million for event insurance.
Logistics and backdoor diplomacy remain obstacles due to India’s reluctance to play in Pakistan. The ICC postponed a Champions Trophy meeting on Saturday due to the BCCI’s insufficient reaction to the hybrid plan.
The financial stakes of India-Pakistan matches influence ICC’s global earnings. The 2023 World Cup match between India and Pakistan generated a record 173 million TV viewers and 225 million internet viewers.
Similar viewership was achieved in their 2021 T20 World Cup match. With its 38% share of ICC earnings, India obtains $90–95 million yearly. However, Pakistan’s financial gains depend on hosting rights and high-stakes matches, making the Champions Trophy crucial for PCB.
Despite delays, the tournament’s framework is expected to be finalized soon. Logistics and schedule are being adjusted after fruitful discussions.
