‘If i coached you, you would have played longer’ – Ex-Chiefs coach to Junior Khanye
Ex-Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson believes that addressing the issue of alcohol requires continuous effort from teams, rather than a quick fix.
Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson has highlighted the importance of discipline in football players.
Hundreds of local soccer players’s careers have been cut short due to off-field incidents like alcohol abuse. Junior Khanye, who played for Amakhosi in the early 2000s, is one of the players who failed to reach his full potential.
The 39-year-old though, has managed to turn his life around in the past four years and even started his podcast called Junior Khanye Khohlwa. Speaking on the podcast, the former Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson said teams should follow Sundowns when it comes to the discipline of players. He gave a good example of Downs captain Themba Zwane, who is still going strong at the age of 35,” he said.
“Maybe I should give credit to Pitso(Mosimane) because when I was in Egypt, he was telling me that he would press the players. It also takes a long time because when you look at how Pitso was at Sundowns, it was eight years? I was the same at Platinum Stars, it’s a South African diversity that we need to understand.
Former Chiefs and Platinum Stars coach talks about discipline
“I had one or two players in the team who did not drink or smoke like Robert Ngambi and Henrico Botes.”
“If I had you(Khanye) during your time, at UJ, you would had the same. We would have pushed you to the same level and you’d have lasted longer in the game,” Johnson added.
The 65-year-old coach left Kaizer Chiefs at the end of last season after he took over as interim coach from Molefi Ntseki.
