An Indian Foreign Service officer died by suicide in Delhi's Chanakyapuri neighbourhood Friday morning. Identified as Jitendra Rawat, he jumped off the roof of his government-allotted home - in a colony for External Affairs Ministry officers - at 6 am, police sources told NDTV.

The ministry has released a statement confirming the death and asking for privacy.

"An officer of the Ministry of External Affairs passed away in the morning of March 7 in New Delhi. The Ministry is providing all possible assistance to the family and is in touch with Delhi Police."

"The ministry stands with the family in this hour of grief and difficulty. Further details are not being released, bearing in mind the need to respect the family's privacy in this time of bereavement."

Sources said Mr Rawat was suffering from depression and was undergoing treatment. He lived on the first floor with his mother, and is survived by his wife and two children, who live in Dehradun.

Mr Rawat's mother was at home when he died, sources said.

He was between 35 and 40 years old, police sources told news agency PTI.

The cops are investigating the tragic incident.
