Inquiry after soccer goalpost falls, kills 10-year-old learner in Tembisa

The Gauteng Department of Education has announced it will conduct its own inquiry into the death of a 10-year-old Grade 5 learner from Reagile Primary School in the Winnie Mandela area of Tembisa.

The learner died on Monday after a goalpost allegedly fell on him while he was playing on the school’s soccer field.

Emergency services called

According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred during the second break.

Emergency services were called to the scene and attempted to resuscitate the child.

However, despite arriving within approximately 20 minutes, paramedics were unable to save him.

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Internal inquiry

“The emergency services were called and they tried to resuscitate. We are informed that they came within 20 minutes, but the child passed on. The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. Normally they will open an inquest case docket and take it from there,” Mabona said.

He added that the department would conduct a parallel internal inquiry.

“As a department, parallel to this, we will also conduct our own inquiry,” he said.

Authorities have not yet provided further details, and investigations remain ongoing.
