The Pakistan Cricket Board confirms that Babar Azam has submitted his resignation as the skipper of Pakistan’s men’s white-ball format on Tuesday evening and it has been accepted.
Meanwhile, the selectors have been tasked with beginning the process of devising the broader white-ball cricket strategies for the future, including the naming a new captain.
This is despite him supported by the PCB for white-ball captaincy, according to a statement saying: “His decision reflects his wish to focus more on making a greater contribution as a player.”.
This decision is a testament to his professionalism and commitment to Pakistan cricket. He believes that by focusing solely on his batting he will be better equipped to contribute significantly to the overall performance of the side in the shorter formats,” the statement added.
It added: “The PCB greatly appreciates the contributions made by Babar as white-ball captain, as a player who always places the team above his interests and for his unwavering commitment to Pakistan cricket. The PCB will continue to back Babar Azam, who remains committed and passionate about continuing to contribute on and off the field for the cause of the side as one of the leading batters and senior statesman.
While it has been a great honor to lead Pakistan, now is the right time to shift my complete focus on batting, team’s objectives during this transitional phase, and back the new captain and emerging players as we prepare for an important season ahead, including the defense of the ICC Champions Trophy on home soil next year,” Azam said.
