Is he being targeted? De Ruyter finds device hidden inside car

There are now concerns for Eskom CEO Andre De Ruyter after a suspiscious device was discovered inside his car, Sunday Times reports.

With the load shedding crisis not going away anytime soon, De Ruyter is facing calls from fierce critics to step down from the embattled power utility. He was appointed to Eskom in January 2020 and has since been on the receiving end of attacks from many, including sectors of business, unions and opposition parties.

According to Sunday Times, Andre De Ruyter roped in retired commissioner George Fizaz, whose company then launched its investigation to determine the source of the device and what its purpose is.

De Ruyter reportedly found the bug last week Friday while he was cleaning his car.

“I was in the back of my Volvo when I saw something strange on the floor underneath the driver’s seat. The device – a motherboard filled with microchips, immediately looked out of place. I assume it was stuck to the bottom of the seat and must have come loose,” he told the newspaper.

De Ruyter says he sent Fizaz a picture of the device to ask him if he needed to be worried.

“He immediately replied that ‘at first glance it looks like a piece of equipment that can be used to intercept communications or transmit location.’ They are still analysing the device to find out more about its capablities,” he further says.

Black Business Council CEO Kganki Matabane has been vocal in their calls for De Ruyter to be given the boot.

“Our beloved country is becoming a laughing stock of the world and a failing state due to lack of political will to hold those who are paid to provide reliable electricity to account. We call for De Ruyter and the board to do the honourable thing and leave Eskom,” Matabane said.
