Is Rohit’s Form Impacting Captaincy?

Former teammates Harbhajan Singh and Cheteshwar Pujara said Rohit Sharma’s poor batting form is harming his captaincy in Australia.

Rohit had only one half-century in his previous 12 test innings, including eight single-digit scores, and batting in the middle order in the second test did not help. Rohit missed India’s emphatic win in Perth to care for his newborn son, and commentators deemed his captaincy in Adelaide, where Australia won by 10 wickets, conservative.

“No matter how big a player is, he worries about his performance,” Singh told Star Sports.

“Runs make players make better decisions. I hope Rohit Sharma scores runs to improve his captaincy.”

Pujara, who was player of the series when India became the first Asian side to win a test series in Australia in 2018-19, believes Rohit might become a more assertive leader with more runs.

“Out-of-form captains damage their captaincy,” Pujara told the station. He also encouraged Rohit, an attacking opener, to avoid early risks.

“He is in poor form. Pujara stated the start is still crucial for him.

“He should steadily get his first 20 or 30 runs. He may then capitalize on the start and score big.”

KL Rahul began for India in the first two tests but may return to middle order for the rest of the series with Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Brisbane hosts the third test on Saturday.
