Kaizer Chiefs to sign midfield maestro from PSL rivals?

Kaizer Chiefs are ready to test SuperSport United’s resolve again by making an offer for Bafana Bafana midfield schemer Grant Margeman.

Chiefs need quality in midfield

SoccerLaduma is reporting that Chiefs have made the signing of Grant Margeman a top priority this winter. So much so that they’ve already made plans to loan existing midfielders out to accommodate the compact 26-year-old Bafana star. Amakhosi have been watching Margeman since he was on loan with Matsatsantsa from Sundowns in 2022. Margeman has been a rock-solid performer in the league for the past two campaigns, missing just six matches for SuperSport in the last 24 months.

Kaizer Chiefs’ interest in Margeman confirmed

“Grant (Margeman) is one of the midfielders they have been monitoring. They have actually inquired about him from SuperSport,” a source disclosed. “It’s still early to say whether the talks have begun or not but interest is there and they have been monitoring him.”

“They are working on opening up space (in the squad) to accommodate him. And have identified some of the players who they could loan out so that they can bring him in,” the insider revealed. “They are really interested in him and they are working hard to land his signature.”

Cele deal is a remote possibility

Meanwhile, 27-year-old midfield general Thabo Cele stated last year that ‘anything is possible’ as he considered his options away from Radomiak in Poland. However, he said his “intention is always to climb a ladder” because he dreams of playing in Europe’s biggest leagues. A move to Russian outfit Fakel Voronezh hasn’t quite gone according to plan for the midfield maestro.

“It is always possible [PSL move], especially when the transfer window is open,” said Cele in Durban during the COSAFA Cup. “And I won’t lie, it’s something that you consider because sometimes you find it tough [abroad], and you think about all other things.”

As recently as August 2023, several clubs were interested in Cele including Sekhukhune, AS Far Rabat, AmaZulu and St Louis City. Ironically, Cele is seen as the overdue and long-term replacement for Njabulo Blom, who signed with St Louis at the end of 2022.

Kaizer Chiefs finished the 2023-2024 league campaign in tenth position, their worst placing in the history of the DStv Premiership. Their last league title came back in 2015, their most recent piece of major silverware. The club’s next friendly outing is in the Toyota Cup, staged in Bloemfontein, on 28 July. They’ll face new manager Nasreddine Nabi’s old club Young Africans from Tanzania.
