KZN floods: Premier seeks URGENT meeting with Auditor-General

Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke has been sent an urgent meeting request by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

The meeting will address the response from the provincial government to the floods

The meeting looks to address KwaZulu-Natal’s response to the devastating floods that wreaked havoc within the province.

Maluleke expressed that the ‘far too slow’ response to the floods indicated that the needs of those impacted by the extreme weather conditions failed to be met within the given time frame, reports SABC News.

The office of the premier believes the meeting will be ‘of great benefit’

Gugu Sisilana the spokesperson in the Office of the Premier stated that they have noted that the AG’s office has not yet finalised the investigation. Adding that the final findings from the investigation will be included in the report which will be ‘finalised later’.

Sisilana stated that the office of the premier believes that meeting with the Auditor-General will be ‘of great benefit’ and will allow the provincial government and all sector institutions in KZN to respond adequately and comprehensively to the issues of concern raised by the AG.

Background

Earlier in the week, Maluleke told Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on Flood Disaster and Relief that the response to the floods in KZN and the EC in April and May was ‘far too slow’.

Mail & Guardian reports that Maluleke said there was a need for a critical evaluation and strengthening of internal controls as well as disaster management capabilities.

KZN flood victims EVICTED from Transnet building they illegally occupied

In other KZN floods news, it was previously reported that a group of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) flood victims including women, the elderly and children were evicted from the Transnet building (Montclair Lodge) they had occupied for two weeks.

Out of 150 flood victims who have sought shelter in the Yellowwood Park Civic Hall, 100 moved out to stay at the Transnet hostel in Montclair. Ward Councillor Gavin Hegter says other KZN flood victims from Umlazi joined these 100 people.

Hegter explained that Transnet obtained an eviction order that was then executed by the Sheriff of the court with the help of the South African Police Service (SAPS). The flood victims were evicted on Monday, 8 August. Hegter said he requested that the SAPS monitor where the people were going but was informed that they could not do so. Read the full story here.
