The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued an Orange Level 5 warning for rain in the Eastern Cape on Friday, 16 September.

LEVEL 5 WEATHER WARNING FOR EASTERN CAPE

The warning is effective from 12:00 on Sunday, 18 September until 21:00 on Tuesday. The weather service said the heavy rain will be caused by a steepening upper-air trough, a surface trough and a ridging high-pressure system.

The mentioned weather phenomena are expected to bring windy conditions, showers and thundershowers to the Eastern Cape from Sunday into Tuesday.

Significant amounts of rainfall – at least 40 to 70mm – are expected in the following municipalities:

  • Buffalo City Metro;
  • Great Kei Local Municipality;
  • Mnquma Local Municipality;
  • Mbhashe Local Municipality;
  • OR Tambo District Municipality;
  • and Alfred Nzo District Municipality.

The potential impacts of the rain that prompted the Level 5 weather warning include:

  • Flooding of roads, settlements, low-lying areas and bridges.
  • Disrupted traffic and municipal services.
  • Damage to property, infrastructure and loss of livelihood.
  • Mudslides and rockfalls are a possibility.
  • Damage to mud-based and makeshift houses and structures.
