Maela on Maritzburg United clash: ‘We didn’t deserve to lose’

Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela says players need to be accountable after losing 1-0 to Maritzburg United on Sunday evening.

According to the experienced defender, the Buccaneers fought to the maximum effort to avoid suffering first defeat to the Team of Choice since 2016.

Jose Riveiro‘s charges conceded a late penalty goal which was converted by Amadou Soukouna after Olisa Ndah was adjudged to have pushed Sibusiso Conco inside the box.

MAELA ON LOSS TO MARITZBURG

“Difficult match but I’m sure that we didn’t deserve to lose, especially in this manner,” Maela told Pirates’ media.

“But we take the lessons, and we go back home to the drawing board. We showed our character and we showed that we wanted to equalise, we wanted to get the goal, but it wasn’t meant to be at the end of the day.

“I think as players we also need to be accountable, we also need to be more responsible in making sure that we finish our chances, not only our forwards but everyone throughout the team.

“Even the defenders are getting the chances with set-pieces, but we will definitely rectify it. we will grow into it and the goals will definitely come. Just so disappointing to lose this match in this manner.”
