Major SA chicken chain expands into Zimbabwe with 10 stores

A fast-growing South African fast-food brand has sets its sights on Zimbabwe, with plans to open 10 new outlets and create hundreds of jobs in the process.

Pedros Flame Grilled Chicken confirmed it will launch its first Zimbabwean stores through a partnership with Canary Wharf Zimbabwe (CWZ), marking the chain’s latest regional expansion.

The rollout is expected to begin in Harare, with the first phase scheduled for completion by February next year.

The brand, founded in 2018, has expanded rapidly across southern and eastern Africa. According to News Day, it now operates more than 210 outlets in countries including South Africa, Zambia, Botswana and Kenya.

Job creation in Zimbabwe

Company representatives say the initial focus on Harare will help streamline logistics and supply chains before expanding into other cities.

“We are looking at opening about 10 stores within the next year, starting in Harare,” said Pedros Operations Executive, Bernard Muneri.

“Each store will employ between 30 and 35 people, which means roughly 300 jobs in the first phase alone.”

All products sourced locally

Executives from Pedros say the business model also relies heavily on local sourcing.

Chicken, vegetables and other fresh ingredients will be procured from Zimbabwean suppliers rather than imported.

This strategy aims to support domestic agriculture while keeping costs competitive. It also mirrors the approach used in other African markets where Pedros already operates.

Partners behind the project believe Zimbabwe’s evolving retail and food service sector offers strong growth potential.

A love for chicken in Southern Africa

By 2025, after being open for just six years, Pedros had opened 173 locations across South Africa and Botswana – making it South Africa’s fastest-growing chicken franchise.

The brand’s rapid expansion has positioned it in direct competition with established flame-grilled chicken chains such as Nando’s and Barcelos.

The rivalry comes as chicken remains South Africa’s most widely-consumed meat.

According to the South African Poultry Association, South Africans consume an average of 36 kilograms of chicken per person each year – more than double the global average of 14.6 kilograms.
