Bafana Bafana international Mothobi Mvala looks set to move from midfield to centre-back for good if Manqoba Mngqithi’s comments are anything to go by.

In his post-match interview on Saturday, Mngqithi explained why Mvala was played at centre-back and not at his usual midfield position against Golden Arrows.

And according to Mngqithi, Sundowns had planned for Mvala to rotate between the two positions when they first signed him from Highlands Park.

In his own words, Mngqithi said the central midfield position is now loaded, and this is the reason Mvala was shifted from midfield to centre-back where Sundowns feel they are very thin.

As things stand, Sundowns have Rivaldo Coetzee, Andile Jali, Teboho Mokoena, Sipho Mbule and Zungu as their central midfielders.

And with Mvala included, this means Sundowns have six central midfielders competing for two places in midfielders, and the technical team decided that the Bafana Bafana man moves to the back four.

The decision could be seen as a move to try and bring in Zungu to that midfield position without killing Mvala’s confidence as he had already been struggling for regular game time since the start of the year.

MVALA MOVES TO CENTRE-BACK TO ACCOMMODATE ZUNGU AT MAMELODI SUNDOWNS?

“In my opinion, he’s still going to continue in that position, and this is what we always planned for him as a technical team,” Mngqithi told reporters.

“Even when we brought him to Sundowns, we wanted to have him for both possibilities. We wanted to have him as a fifth centre-back and as another option in midfield.”

“But now that we have loaded the midfield, and we are having slight challenges with our central defence, he is a good option for us to have,” added Mngqithi.
