At least four bodies of men have been discovered near the N1 highway in Johannesburg, along the West Rand. Authorities say the remains were found at the Maraisburg off-ramp in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 14 September 2022.

Several media reports suggests that the number of bodies was actually six.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the murder victims appear to have been shot, stabbed and even burnt to death. They also suspect that the men were all illegal miners.

For now, the circumstances surrounding the gruesome find remain unknown, however SAPS is on the scene, searching for more victims. This isn’t the first time that bodies of alleged zama-zamas were found near a busy road.

Back in April, Gauteng police launched an investigation after bodies were found on the side of the road in Benoni. At the time, authorities said they had received an anonymous phone call informing them about the discovery.

Perhaps one of the most shocking stories of all was in June 2021, when the burnt bodies of 20 suspecterd illegal miners were also found in Orkney, near Klerksdorp. Some of the bodies had been located along the Ariston Road near a railway line while others were found inside an old and unused mine shaft.
