Over 877,000 Yogi Tea Bags Recalled Due To Elevated Levels of Pesticides
Yogi recalled its popular organic herbal tea after the U.S. Food & Drug Administration reported elevated levels of pesticides in the product. Here's what you need to know.
East West Tea Company, LLC has voluntarily recalled over 877 thousand bags of Organic Yogi Echinacea Immune Support tea because pesticide residues were detected above action levels—the products are contaminated with pesticides and are unsafe to consume. The recall was initiated on March 12 with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the investigation is ongoing.
The recalled tea bags are sold in boxes—each box has four packs and each pack contains 16 tea bags—marked with the following UPC: 0 76950 45010 3. The CASE GTIN on the recalled products are 60076950450105 and 20076950450107.

What Is an Action Level?
Farmers frequently use pesticides to protect their products from insects, weeds, fungi, and other pests. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets limits for the amount of pesticide residues allowed to remain in or on food and still be safe for consumers. The FDA monitors and tests food products for over 800 pesticide chemical residues, and reports on the testing results.
Sometimes, farmers can't avoid pesticides found in the environment, even when safe agricultural practices are performed. The FDA sets an "action level" for these unavoidable pesticides. If a product is found to have pesticide residue above the action level, it is deemed unsafe to consume and is recalled.
Neither the FDA nor the East West Tea Company has revealed the type and amount of pesticide chemicals that were found on the recalled tea product.
