‘Painful to admit’: Modise chooses heart over loyalty in Pirates title call
Modise has made a bold call on the title race, backing Pirates to finish the job if they maintain their current form at the top of the log.
Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates midfielder Teko Modise has tipped the Buccaneers to win the league.
The Sea Robbers have not tasted league glory in 14 years, but that could change if they maintain their lead until the end of the season. Pirates sit six points clear at the top of the Betway Premiership after 16 matches played.
Modise admitted that it would be hard to see Pirates winning the league but conceded that they have played well this season.
“Orlando Pirates will win the league this season, as painful as it is Pirates will win the league. It would be jealous if I say they won’t win the league with how they’ve been playing,” he said.
“I am a Sundowns guy but I am where I am because of Orlando Pirates. I played for both teams but I won everything with Sundowns and Sundowns is my home.”
Modise played for both Sundowns and Pirates
“What Orlando Pirates is having right now, it would be unfair and an injustice for me to say they’re not gonna win the league the way they’re playing, it would be jealous, because I am not jealous.
“I think Pirates is going to win the league and they should, based on the number of good things they’ve been doing all season. Come Wednesday, they win that game, they win the league,” Modise added.
Sundowns and Pirates face off on Wednesday in what could be a potential title decider. A win for the Buccaneers will put them nine points clear but a draw will still put them in the driving seat.
Modise, though, feels Orlando Pirates have the edge and could have their hand on the trophy should they beat Masandawana on Wednesday evening in Soweto.
Will Pirates win the league or can Sundowns make a comeback?
