Pakistani hitters lost half their team to a merciless Australian bowling assault in less than 30 overs on Monday.
The hosts invited the Green Shirts to bat first in the series opener at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where they lost wickets regularly and are currently 151-7. Mitchell Starc bowled debutant opener Saim Ayub (1) in the third over. His opening partner Abdullah Shafique lost to Starc after a shaky 12-run knock.
Babar Azam, who returned to the national team after being rested in the final two Tests of the three-match series against England, fell to Adam Zampa at 37.
Kamran Ghulam and Salman Ali Agha were dismissed after five and 12 runs, respectively. Skipper Mohammad Rizwan dug in but failed to score big and left after 44 runs. Shaheen Shah Afridi was removed at 24, leaving Irfan Khan (12*) and Naseem Shah (3*) on the crease.
Pakistan are playing their first ODI after losing 93 runs to England in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The national team struggled at the huge event and missed the semi-finals. However, Australia is fresh off their 3-2 away series win over England.
The five-time World Cup winners have won 70 of 108 ODIs against the Green Shirts’ 34. Australian ODIs at home are as impressive, with 37 wins out of 56 and 17 wins for Pakistan.
Shaheen Shah Afridi leads a four-man fast-bowling attack for Pakistan, with Irfan Khan making his ODI debut in the middle order. After Gary Kirsten resigned as Green Shirts’ white-ball coach, former Australian international Jason Gillespie will coach the visitors for the series and three T20Is.
With Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head on paternity leave, world champions Australia have a new starting pair in Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matt Short. Sean Abbott joined Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc in the hosts’ pace attack on a cloudy day while Josh Hazlewood rested.
