Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony highlights

The Olympic torch and Lady Gaga’s feather-filled performance opened the 2024 Olympics in Paris on Friday on the Seine River. Alex Cooper, Snoop Dogg, Simone Biles, Sha’Carri Richardson, Katie Ledecky, and Coco Gauff were among the commentators and contestants during the ceremony. As the event began, a huge plume of blue, white, and red smoke rose above a river bridge. “We are super excited; it happens once in a lifetime,” 17-year-old Elise Boukorrass remarked before the event.

According to Vogue, Zinedine Zidane raced across Paris to bring the flame from the Stade de France to the Seine, starting the grandiose performance. Lady Gaga shouted, “Bonsoir, bienvenue en Paris!” as the parade continued. Lady Gaga’s long-rumored performance includes Zizi Jeanmaire’s “Mon Truc En Plume” with flamingo-pink pompom-clad dancers. Jolly’s opening ceremony was theatrical, featuring music from “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Les Misérables”, Georges Bizet’s “Carmen”, and a thrilling set by French heavy metal band Gojira at the Conciergerie.

Alexandre Kantorow, a French pianist, played one of Ravel’s most famous works beautifully. It rained during the ceremony, so the performance translated “Fountains” and “Playing Water.” The celebration ended with Céline Dion’s Eiffel Tower performance, the most anticipated. Her outfit sparkled with beads. Edith Piaf’s 1950s song “Hymne à L’Amour” included Dion. From Friday, July 26 until Sunday, August 11, the Olympics began.
