Ramaphosa was accompanied by Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela to assess the destruction on Monday, 12 September.

It is reported that a mine dam in the area burst, which left destruction in its wake and many families displaced.

The dam burst also destroyed property, in the form of homes and vehicles, and left many people in need of medical attention.

THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE INCIDENT

This, as the mud spillage from the dam, literally made its way into people’s homes and caused unimaginable damage.

According to the Free State Government, the President, who was accompanied by Ministers and other senior government officials, pledged solidarity with the people of Jagersfontein and made a commitment that those whose homes were destroyed, will receive support from government. President Ramaphosa further said an investigation will be launched to determine the cause of this tragedy.

Premier Ntombela said the investigation will help them to get to the bottom of this matter.

“Listening to what the people were telling us, which were raw human stories of tragedy and survival, one had a clear understanding of the extent of this tragedy,” she said.
