Pride Month in South Africa is in full swing and the LGBTQI+ community is out in full force having colourful celebrations. We’ve compiled a list of five of Mzansi’s most loved queer families to celebrate! Take a look…

1. SOMIZI MHLONGO 

Somizi Mhlongo shares his daughter, Bahumi Madisakwane, with actress Palesa Madisakwane. The former Idols SA judge and Madisakwane had Bahumi in 1995 before he came out as a gay man. The three of them share parts of their lives on Somizi’s reality show, Living the Dream with Somizi

2. TOYA DELAZY 

South African-born singer-songwriter Toya Delazy and Ally Chaig welcomed their first child in May. The queer couple named their baby girl Kali Langa, which means :Strength” in Swahili and “Sunshine” in Zulu. 

“You also carry the powerful name of a Hindu goddess, representing time, the force of nature and divine feminine. You are also born on the day you great grandfather King Dinizulu ka Cetswayo was officially recognised as King of the Zulu’s by the British government,” wrote Delazy on Instagram.

3. CASTER SEMENYA 

South African middle-distance runner Caster Semenya and her wife Violet Raseboya welcomed a second addition to their family earlier this year. The gold medalist shared a heartwarming picture of the little one in June. The couple had their first child, Oratile, after four unsuccessful insemination processes.

4. MOONCHILD SANELLY 

Award-winning singer-songwriter Moonchild Sanelly is a mother to three daughters between the ages of 8 and 14. Speaking to Drum, she said her eldest daughter is an outspoken teenager.

“She is very open to me about all things and the twins are both parts of me, it’s funny to watch the power of dynamics between them.”

5. LETOYA MAKHENE 


Former Generations: The Legacy actress Letoya Makhene is married to businesswoman Lebo Kwasa. According to Sunday World, she shares three children with her ex-husband Privilege Mangezi.
