On Wednesday, skipper Rohit Sharma said India will not hurry Mohammed Shami’s comeback to international cricket in the last two tests in Australia until they are “200% sure” about his fitness.
Shami has not played international cricket since the 50-overs World Cup last year due to ankle surgery. A natural second seamer for India, the 34-year-old has returned to local cricket to establish his health.
The absence of assistance for pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in Australia has sparked calls for Shami’s recall, but Rohit was apprehensive about recalling the bowler, who complained knee swelling on his recovery path.
“I understand he’s playing a lot of cricket back home, but there have been some knee complaints,” Rohit said after India drew the rain-soaked third test in Brisbane on Wednesday.
The last thing you want is a player coming in and leaving midway through the game. Remember what happens when that happens.”
He stated he will follow the NCA medics’ advice, where Shami received rehabilitation.
“The door is open if the NCA folks think he’s ready to heal and play. We’ll enjoy his presence.”
Bumrah leads the five-test series in Australia in wickets, but Mohammed Siraj has struggled.
Third seamer Akash Deep’s performance at the Gabba, where he took three wickets and scored 31 to avoid follow-on, will give India hope.
