The men sought by police had previously run rings around local law enforcement teams, acting with impunity during their shop raids. Yesterday, their luck ran out – but not before they targeted a business and helped themselves to money, cell phones, and other valuable items.

Cops were quickly summoned to the scene. The action took place downtown on Pietermaritz Street. A total of five suspects had engaged in yet another shop robbery, and were attempting to flee in a white VW Polo.

However, when their escape routes were blocked off, desperation got the better of these thugs.

During the car chase, three of the crooks were fatally wounded by SAPS’ sharp shooters . The other two involved in this crime were able to make a break for it, however.

From robbery to rough justice, the dramatic scene played out within a matter of minutes. Police officers involved in the operation have been praised for their bravery, and it is hoped that this severely decimated gang will no longer be able to terrorise the Pietermaritzburg community.

Two bodies were found lying by the roadside, and the getaway driver was discovered slumped over the wheel. Police closed the road off on Wednesday afternoon, before reopening it to traffic late last night. Police are still searching for the men that got away, however.
