Six-day water supply disruption expected in parts of Johannesburg
Johannesburg Water will conduct a six-day water supply operation affecting several areas as part of preparations for structural repairs.
Residents in several Soweto communities are expected to experience water supply disruptions as Johannesburg Water prepares for structural repairs at the Aeroton reservoir.
The utility announced that the planned operation will affect areas including Orlando West, Orlando West Extensions 1, 2 and 5, Orlando East, Orlando Ekhaya, Diepkloof, and Diepkloof Extensions 2, 4 and 10. All streets within these areas will be impacted during the maintenance period.
Johannesburg Water stated that the planned activity will begin on 16 March at 7:00 and continue until 22 March at 7:00.
Johannesburg Water maintenance preparation at Aeroton reservoir
According to the utility, the operation forms part of preparations to address infrastructure challenges at the Aeroton reservoir.
Johannesburg Water explained that the work involves a “dummy run in preparation for structural repairs of leaking Aeroton reservoir.”
The planned process will allow technicians to test systems and prepare the infrastructure before the major repair work begins. Such preparations help ensure that future repairs can be carried out more efficiently and with minimal disruption to the broader network.
Water pressure expected to drop
During the six-day operation, residents in affected areas may experience disruptions to the water supply.
Johannesburg Water warned that customers could face “low pressure to no water” during the planned maintenance period. This means households may notice significantly reduced water flow or temporary water shortages, especially during peak consumption times.
Because the maintenance requires adjustments to the system, supply fluctuations are expected across the network serving these communities.
No alternative water supply planned
Johannesburg Water indicated that alternative water supply points will not be provided during the operation.
The utility said “location of alternative water supply: not applicable. The reservoir will be placed on bypass over the period.” This means engineers will temporarily reroute the system while the reservoir is taken offline for the planned preparation work.
Despite the short-term inconvenience, Johannesburg Water said the project will deliver long-term benefits to the affected communities.
