South Coast holiday hotspot Margate hit by flooding – WATCH

Heavy rainfall in Margate on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast has caused widespread flooding in the town’s central business district (CBD).

Videos circulating on social media show large volumes of water surging through roads and alleyways in the centre of town, while several trees have been uprooted, blocking roads in parts of the area.

The popular Shelley Beach Centre in nearby Shelley Beach was also affected by flooding.

Damage

In some of the footage, shop owners can be seen mopping water from shop floors and passageways as they assess the damage.

Reports have also emerged of flooded homes in Palm Beach and Port Shepstone. Marius Myburgh from KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service confirmed that, at this stage, no injuries have been reported.

Further heavy rainfall and flood damage have been reported in Port Edward on the South Coast, Empangeni on the North Coast, and Pietermaritzburg in the Midlands.
