Springboks new era: A giant and Next Gen star ready to replace legends
This Springboks giant and next generation star have propelled themselves into prime position to replace a couple of legends of the game.
Coach Rassie Erasmus is readying the next generation of Springbok rugby stars as you read this article.
The Springboks will head into the 2027 Rugby World Cup as one of the most experienced teams in the tournament in Australia. Several players are expected to make their 100th appearances for South Africa this year.
Meanwhile, Erasmus has already started to blood new talent to prepare to usher in the new era of Springbok rugby following the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
This front row giant and Next Gen star are ready to step up and fill some legendary boots.
SPRINGBOK GIANT READY TO FILL EVEN BIGGER BOOTS
Frans Malherbe missed the duration of the 2025 Test season due to injury.
In his absence, Wilco Louw stepped up – and in fact played more rugby than any Springbok players during 2025, making him the highest-paid Springbok last season.
Louw not only stepped up, he dismantled every scrum in sight.
The 144kg Springbok giant has staked a strong claim to start for the Springboks moving forward, especially given the fact that the legendary Malherbe is now 35.
It’s clear that he is one of the Boks entering the latter stages of his career.
Meanwhile, at 31, Louw is poised, primed and ready to step up into Malherbe’s iconic boots – as he showed whenever he was called upon in 2025.

WESSELS GIVES RASSIE OPTIONS
Meanwhile, Jan-Hendrik Wessels is able to play both hooker and prop.
At 24 years of age, he offers a younger, more versatile option than the likes of Vincent Koch (36) and Trevor Nyakane (36), who are also approaching the end of their Springboks careers.
Furthermore, the fact that he can switch to hooker means Erasmus can utilise him in a similar role to the way he used Marco van Staden and Deon Fourie (flanks used at No 2) at previous Rugby World Cups, a move that took World Rugby by storm.
This does not make for good reading for the likes of Bongi Mbonambi (35), since Rassie has a player who is younger, more explosive and dynamic, and who can cover more multiple positions.
Therefore, expect Louw and Wessels to play more regularly as Rassie Erasmus ushers in the new era and we watch the end of an era with the likes of Koch, Nyakane and Malherbe, possibly Mbonambi too, entering the latter stages of their storied Springboks careers.
