The Cape Town police found the stolen vehicle of the late Magistrate, Romay van Rooyen, on Sunday night. Her lifeless body was discovered in her Marina da Gama home by a family member on Saturday afternoon, 10 September.

VAN ROOYEN’S VEHICLE RECOVERED

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut told The South African that the stolen vehicle was recovered in Mitchells Plain on Sunday night. “The investigation is still underway and arrests are yet to be made,” he said.

According to reports, the 50-year-old’s body was found in her residence in Red Roman Street, Marina da Gama. The cause of death was not disclosed but a murder investigation is underway. The Cape Town police said van Rooyen’s vehicle was missing from the scene, at the time.

Her family grew worried after van Rooyen failed to show up for an afternoon appointment. The body was found when a family member went to check on her.

Before her appointment as a permanent additional Magistrate at the Vredenburg Court in October 2021, van Rooyen presided as an acting officer at various Magistrates’ Courts in the province.

She started her career in 1997 as a prosecutor for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) – first working in the district and regional courts before moving to the Western Cape High Court.

“The safety of our judicial officers remains an utmost priority. Magistrate Van Rooyen’s untimely passing is a devastating loss to our judiciary and our courts. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends and colleagues,” said Minister of Justice, Ronald Lamola.
