Table Mountain opens new accessible pathway

A new universal access pathway has officially opened up on Table Mountain.

In a bid to promote inclusivity, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway (TMACC) teamed up with South African National Parks (SANParks) to install a pathway on the summit of the iconic landmark.

The universal access pathway was unveiled on Friday, 24 April 2026.

With its implementation, the wooden structure accommodates for the following persons:

• Wheelchair users
• Motorised scooter users
• Families with prams
• Anyone facing mobility challenges

IMPROVING ACCESSIBILITY

Per a blog post by TMACC, their collaborative effort with SANParks is more than “just an infrastructure upgrade.” Rather, the access pathway is “a statement about the future of tourism.”

“By embracing principles of universal design, the project highlights how natural heritage sites can evolve to serve a broader and more diverse community of visitors,” they said. “It is about dignity, independence and the simple joy of being able to experience a place like Table Mountain without barriers.”

TMACC continued: “As part of Table Mountain National Park, the summit has long been a symbol of South Africa’s natural beauty. Now, it also stands as a symbol of progress – where accessibility and conservation go hand in hand.”

TABLE MOUNTAIN AND INCLUSIVE TOURISM

As a major Capetonian attraction, Table Mountain is visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year. These include residents, citizens from across the country and international tourists.

Persons with mobility challenges are also among the countless visitors who take the scenic trip up to the mountain’s summit.

As such, TMACC’s goal is to improve accessibility where possible. In addition to the new universal access pathway, visitors can make use of cableway wheelchairs and mobility scooters at the Top Station.

What’s more, they can utilise TMACC’s wheelchair and mobility scooter route map, ramps, elevators at the Lower Cable Station and paved pathways at the summit of the mountain.
