Taiwan's Diplomatic Representative: 'Taiwan is a taboo in the United Nations'

Taiwan’s military said it shot down a drone hovering over one of its island outposts just off the Chinese coast on Thursday amid a spike in tensions with Beijing. Tensions between the sides have been especially high since China fired missiles into the Taiwan Strait and mobilized ships and warplanes in the area after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last month. Joining FRANCE 24 to address the heightened tensions between Taiwan and China is François Chih-Chung Wu, Taiwan's Diplomatic Representative in France. On the day that Taiwan took out a Chinese drone and 14 Chinese aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait median line, the UN accused China of serious human rights violations that may amount to “crimes against humanity” in a long-delayed report examining a crackdown on Uyghurs. The Taiwanese diplomat tells FRANCE 24 that he is very pleased that the United Nations has now made public an official report accusing China of serious human rights violations. For him, this is not just another report, it really matters. "The more we talk about Taiwan, the more we talk about Hong Kong, the more we talk about Xinjiang, the more we talk about Tibet, it will always be a very good thing." He truly hopes that the UN will eventually address the "serious conflict happening between China and Taiwan. It concerns not only our values that we share together but also the interests of the world."
