Teen arrested for Magistrate Romay van Rooyen’s alleged murder

The Hawks arrested an 18-year-old suspect in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town in connection with the alleged murder of a Western Cape Magistrate. The victim was found dead in her home earlier this month.

MAGISTRATE VAN ROOYEN’S ALLEGED KILLER ARRESTED

Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the teenage suspect was traced and arrested at his home in Mitchells Plain by a multidisciplinary team.

The Hawks’ Crimes Against the State unit, National Priority Violent Crime Investigation, Digital Forensic Investigation and the Priority Crime Management Centre helped with the operation.

“The suspect was identified following the discovery of the body of the 50-year old, Vredenburg Magistrate, Romay van Rooyen at her home in Marina da Gama near Muizenberg on the 10 September 2022,” said Mogale.

As previously reported, van Rooyen’s stolen vehicle was recovered in Mitchells Plain on Sunday, 11 September.

The Magistrate’s body was found in her home in Red Roman Street, Marina da Gama by a family member who went to check on her.

Van Rooyen served as a Magistrate at the Vredenburg Court. She started her career in 1997 as a prosecutor for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

“The safety of our judicial officers remains an utmost priority. Magistrate Van Rooyen’s untimely passing is a devastating loss to our judiciary and our courts. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends and colleagues,” said Minister of Justice, Ronald Lamola, after her passing.
