Mamelodi Sundowns are expected to unveil Bafana Bafana international Terrence Mashego whom they have signed from Cape Town City.

For Mashego, this transfer isn’t only huge, but it is seen as a ‘homecoming’ as the 24-year-old left-back was born and bred in Mamelodi.

Five years ago, Sundowns president Dr Patrice Motsepe and Pitso Mosimane were obsessed with bringing Mamelodi-born stars to the club.

This was to make these footballers feel wanted within the community of Mamelodi, uplifting them and ensuring that they give back to the same community.

However, history shows that the idea hasn’t really worked. In fact, these players saw their careers take a downward spiral while at Sundowns.

Now, as Mashego prepares to continue his football journey, this time with Sundowns, he should be aware of how his ‘homeboys’ fared at the club.

THE CURSE OF MAMELODI-BORN FOOTBALLERS AT SUNDOWNS

KOKETSO MMOTONG

Mmotong, now 42, joined Sundowns from the now-defunct Platinum Stars as hot property in September 2008.

However, he became a benchwarmer soon after joining Sundowns, and he left having only made nine appearances and scoring once.

LUCKY MOHOMI

Mohomi arrived at Chloorkop as a midfield anchor of note from the now-defunct Free Stars in 2016 after catching the eye of Mosimane.

However, he managed just 32 appearances during his stint before resurfacing at SuperSport United four years later.

GEORGE LEBESE

It was in August 2017 when Lebese dumped Kaizer Chiefs for Sundowns but that proved to a bad career decision by the left-footer.

Lebese would leave Sundowns for SuperSport United on loan in the final six months of his contract having made just 16 appearances and scoring twice during his two-year stint.

THOKOZANI SEKOTLONG

Sekotlong made the unexpected switch to Chloorkop in 2017 after a brief stint with Free State Stars but his career failed to take off at Sundowns.

He would be sent on loan to Black Leopards in the final six months of contract before being released in 2019 with just two goals in 12 matches to his name.
