Three other occupants who were trapped beneath the rubble were successfully rescued and rushed to hospital.

Trapped under the debris

According to Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), six people were inside the building at the time of the collapse.

When emergency crews arrived on the scene, three people were found trapped under the debris.

Rescue teams worked to extricate all those trapped.

The survivors – two adult women and a child – were removed from the rubble and transported to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital for medical treatment.

Investigation under way

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the collapse, and investigations are under way to determine what led to the incident.

Emergency services have urged residents to avoid the area as assessments continue, while officials work to establish whether the structure was safe for occupation.
