Trump posts, deletes racist video showing Obamas as apes

US President Donald Trump shared a post on Truth Social showing Barack and Michelle Obama as monkeys, prompting widespread condemnation across the political spectrum on Friday.

The post, which Trump later deleted, included a video promoting false claims that Dominion Voting Systems helped steal the 2020 election from Trump.

White House first defends, then blames staff

The White House initially dismissed the backlash as “fake outrage.”

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the video as “an internet meme depicting President Trump as the King of the Jungle and Democrats as characters from The Lion King.” Urging the media to “report on something that actually matters.”

Twelve hours later, a White House official admitted that a staffer had erroneously posted the video, and it was promptly removed.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he had not seen the full video and had only reviewed the first part.

“I just looked at the first part… and I didn’t see the whole thing,” he said. Trump defended the broader claims about election fraud but said he condemned the racist imagery.

Democrats condemn the post by Trump

Democrats reacted strongly. Former Vice President Kamala Harris accused the White House of attempting a cover-up.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called Trump “vile, unhinged and malignant” and urged Republicans to denounce the post immediately.

Republicans join in criticising Trump

Some Republicans also criticised the post.

Senator Tim Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, called it “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House” and urged Trump to remove it.

Senator Roger Wicker called the post “totally unacceptable” and said the president should apologise.
