First National Bank (FNB) has officially become the latest bank to roll out digital Smart ID services in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs.

The launch, announced by Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber on 1 April 2026, marks another major step in the country’s push to modernise ID applications through banks.

First four walk-in branches

FNB has started with four branches offering walk-in Smart ID services, all located in Gauteng:

  • FNB Woodmead
  • FNB Lakeside Mall
  • FNB Krugersdorp
  • FNB Pretoria CBD

These branches allow customers to apply for Smart IDs directly in-branch, without needing to book in advance.

In addition to the new rollout, several branches were already supporting the system through earlier phases. These were:

  • Lynnwood (Grove Shopping Mall, Pretoria)
  • Centurion Lifestyle (Pretoria)
  • 4 Merchant Place (Johannesburg)
  • FNB Greenpoint (Cape Town)
  • Burgersfort (Limpopo)
  • FNB Cornubia (Durban)
  • FNB The Glen (Johannesburg)

This brings the bank’s growing footprint into the broader national network of bank branches offering Smart ID services.

A rapid expansion planned for FNB

The bank has also made it clear that this is just the beginning.

It plans to expand Smart ID services to over 240 branches by the end of 2026, which would make it one of the largest contributors to the rollout.

Branch availability will be updated regularly through the bank’s website and banking app as more locations go live.

With FNB joining the programme, the total number of bank branches offering Smart ID services in South Africa has now reached 110, according to the Department of Home Affairs.

This includes participation from multiple banks, all working toward the same goal of reducing pressure on Home Affairs offices, cutting down waiting time and making ID services more accessible for South Africans.
