Wait, what? Zuma could be elected as ANC National Chairperson

Some within the ANC think that former President Jacob Zuma can still serve as National Chairperson as the party gears up for its conference.

Wait, what? Zuma could be elected as ANC National Chairperson

Former African National Congress (ANC) President Jacob Zuma says he has been approached to avail himself for the position of National Chairman in the upcoming 55th National Conference.

The ANC will hold its 55th National Conference in December 2022 and Zuma’s announcement comes as the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has come forward with the names of Dr Zweli Mkhize and Paul Mashatile as their preferred President and Deputy President respectively.

WILL ZUMA BE ELECTED ANC CHAIRPERSON?

In a letter dated 26 September, Zuma weighed in on the upcoming conference and where he stands on certain issues that affect the ruling party.

“I also wish to confirm that I have been approached by a number of cadres to make myself available for the position of national chairperson of the ANC, to contribute in the rebuilding of the organisation and to provide direction,” he said.

Zuma also said that he has indicated that he will be guided by the branches of the ANC and that he will not refuse such a call should they deem it necessary for me to serve the organisation again at  that level or any other.

Furthermore, the embattled former president said branches should be given space to do their work without being coerced or manipulated and without the use of money to influence nominations and votes.

WHO IS JZ SUPPORTING AS THE NEXT ANC LEADER?

Zweli Mkhize has emerged as a wildcard, with some branches in KZN backing the scandal-hit former minister. However, Jacob Zuma is going down a more tried and tested route. On Monday night, JZ revealed that he would be backing Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma for ANC President.

“The candidate we supported in 2017 Dlamini-Zuma] remains the most competent to lead the ANC, given her track record in the movement, her leadership capabilities, and her understanding of the party. Comrades have dismally failed to present a better candidate.”
