Former Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram expressed his concern about Shaheen Afridi’s poor performances in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. In a recent interview, Akram brought out Afridi’s lack of diversity in his bowling, claiming that he has not yet learnt how to bowl outswing consistently.
“He hasn’t learned how to bowl outswing on a consistent basis. He has only two types of deliveries. Bowl a yorker or keep straight. The world knows about his bowling, and batters are ready to challenge him. “He can’t take the ball from the batter,” Wasim Akram stated.
After their poor performance against archrivals India in Dubai, former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez criticized the pace attack of Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf. Hafeez voiced displeasure in their frequent failures in big events since the 2023 Asia Cup in an interview.
Hafeez stated Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf failed in the 2023 Asia Cup, 50-over World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy 2025. We must admit that, despite their brilliance, they haven’t won large events for Pakistan. Mohammad Ali, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Wasim Jr., Akif Javed, and Mir Hamza should be given chances. He said these Pakistani guys are waiting for their chances and deserve them.
Shaheen Afridi’s tournament performance is worrisome. So, his bowling performances against New Zealand and India were costly, allowing runs without contributing.
His economy rate was 6.80 in ten overs against New Zealand, where he conceded 68 runs without a wicket. His performance against India was likewise disappointing, bowling eight overs, giving 72 runs and taking two wickets at 9.25.
On Monday, defending champions Pakistan and Bangladesh became the first teams eliminated from the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, which runs until March 9. The Green Shirts, led by Sarfaraz Ahmed, defended their title against New Zealand.
The Kiwis had defeated them twice in the recent tri-nation ODI series, which also included South Africa. After losing to the Kiwis in the Champions Trophy opening, Pakistan lost their second straight match to India, when Virat Kohli scored an undefeated century (100*) to chase Pakistan’s 241 runs in Dubai.
