WATCH: Man terrorised by ‘racist dog’ in Durban AirBnB
What's the last thing you would want to deal with at your AirBnB? Because we reckon 'a racist dog' is right at the top of that list.
A young businessman/entrepreneur has had the fright of his life this week, after he was stalked by a ‘racist dog’ at his AirBnB. Wandile Mthiyane had booked a month at the accommodation in Durban, only to realise that he’d be sharing the property with a Pitbull-mix.
Allegedly ‘racist dog’ makes AirBnB stay a nightmare
The owner of the property, identified only as a ‘white South African lady’, allegedly told her guest that he would have to ‘share the garden’ with the prejudiced pup. She even suggested creating a schedule where Mthiyane and the racist dog would co-ordinate their outside times.
The whole exercise has been beyond humiliating for the young go-getter, who expressed concerns about his safety while in the AirBnB. The owner also revealed how, exactly, her canine could have developed such a personality trait – and the answer left Mr. Mthiyane stunned:
“I just got into my AirBnB, and my white South African host told me she has a racist dog, so I should coordinate with her when to be outside. I swear I wish I were making this s**t up. Really, I don’t feel safe here.”
“I asked her how did the dog become racist, and she said, ‘because she was rescued from a township and hurt by [black people]’. Manje, does this mean I can only have white friends over? If my schedule gets mixed up with the Pitbull mixed dog, I may get bitten.” | Wandile Mthiyane
AirBnB guest forced to change accommodation after Durban encounter
The firm eventually replied to the distressed client, although it’s claimed the dispute took ‘more than two days’ to resolve. AirBnB insist that they will not tolerate any form of discrimination, and encouraged Wandile Mthiyane to contact them immediately.
“Hello, we saw your tweet – AirBnB does not condone discrimination in any way. Please meet us via DM with the email address associated with the AirBnB profile, and we’ll follow up.” | AirBnB response on Twitter
- Mthiyane has, however, been able to book a new stay elsewhere – with the help of AirBnB officials:
In tge early hours I had a WhatsApp chat with the CEO of @resolutionproj who was concerned about my safety and advised me to apply for the emergancy fund so they’d help get me to a safe space. Through that surety, I escaped and had booked a new location for a shorter period,..

WATCH: Racist dog blamed for ‘unpleasant’ stay
A video of the racist dog was also posted online. Although he looked fairly docile here, the host had warned Wandile Mthiyane that her pet pooch is likely to attack or bite him ‘because of his mistreatment’. It really is no way to spend your time away, is it…
