WCBS calls for existing, new blood donors amid critically low stocks
With specific blood stocks running low, the WCBS is urging blood donors, both existing and new, to help replenish their supply.
The Western Cape is currently facing critically low stock for certain blood groups. Thus, the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is calling on frequent and potential blood donors to help boost their stocks.
Per a press release shared on Tuesday, 9 December, the WCBS say that they are facing a short supply of O-negative, O-positive and B-positive stocks.
WCBS: ‘BLOOD IS NEEDED MOST URGENTLY’
Marike Carli, the public relations manager at WCBS, explains:
We rely on the generosity of all our donors to keep blood stocks at healthy levels. While O-negative, O-positive and B-positive blood is needed most urgently right now, every donation from every blood group helps ensure that we can continue providing patients with the care they need.
One unit of blood (475 millilitres) is enough to save up to three lives. With the festive season upon us, donating blood – particularly if you fall into one of these three blood groups – is a life-saving gift that you should consider giving.
HERE’S HOW YOU CAN DONATE
All donations will go towards replenishing the WCBS’ blood stocks, benefitting countless patients across the Western Cape.
If you would like to become a blood donor, you will need to meet the following requirements:
- You must be between the ages of 16 and 75.
- You weigh 50 kilograms or more.
- You are medically healthy.
- You lead a safe lifestyle.
- Remember to eat a hearty meal approximately three or four hours before making your donation. This helps increase your fluid intake before and after the donation is completed.
BRING-A-BUDDY BLOOD DONATION CAMPAIGN
The WCBS is currently running their “Bring-a-Buddy” campaign. This means that if you are an existing blood donor, and you bring along a new donor to give blood, both of you will each receive a beach bat set.
The campaign will run until this Saturday, 13 December 2025.
So, folks, if you’re ready to give the gift of blood, visit wcbs.org.za or send a WhatsApp message to 060 549 7244 for more information or to locate your nearest blood donation clinic.
