Sri Lanka’s budding cricket prodigy Harshitha Madavi was named ICC Women’s Player of the Month for August 2024. Madavi won this award following a brilliant performance against Ireland, solidifying her status as a top women’s cricketer. The winner beat Irish competitors Orla Prendergast and Gaby Lewis.
Madavi is the third Sri Lankan woman to win the award this year, a milestone for women’s cricket. Her teammate Chamari Athapaththu won in May and July before her. Dunith Wellalage was selected the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for August, recognizing Sri Lanka’s global cricket presence.
Madavi excelled against Ireland in T20I and ODI formats in August. In the two-match T20I series, she scored an unbeaten 86* and 65, leading both teams in runs. The leading run-scorer in the ODI leg, she scored 19, 105, and 48* to extend her stellar run in the series.
In the second ODI, the left-handed batsman became the third Sri Lankan woman to score an ODI century, after Chamari Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunaratne. This milestone shows her growing influence on international women’s cricket.
