Mohammad Rizwan, the right-handed batsman and wicket-keeper, will be the strongest candidate for the post of captain of the Pakistan cricket team after the resignation of Babar Azam. Sources said the concerned officials have been tasked to hold consultations with Mohammad Rizwan regarding the selection of teams.
On cue, the former Pakistan captain had announced a day earlier that he was stepping down from white-ball captaincy, as it was time for him to focus on his playing role and personal growth.
“I will have clarity moving forward and focus more energy on my game and personal growth by stepping down,” the 29-year-old batter wrote on X.
Sources close to him said Babar was not asked to resign from captaincy, but was instead asked to remain captain of the ODI team as white-ball coach Gary Kirsten wanted him.
This is in keeping with Kirsten’s plan, if bringing in a new captain for the T20 format as part of the team’s future strategies, according to sources, adding that the coach had asked for the change to be made in July.
Sources maintained Kirsten arrived in Pakistan in July for meetings and sharing of the report on T20 World Cup, saying the coach also met Babar in the same month to discuss the issues of captaincy.
Reports suggest that Kirsten was consistently encouraging Babar to stay on as captain in the ODIs even during the connection camp.
The 29-yearold had been unconvinced about retaining the captaincy after being distanced with the team and not valuing himself, sources said, adding he was not in touch with the board after the World Cup.
The Board had also not taken Babar into any confidence. He, nonetheless, informed a top board official before announcing his decision to quit batting. Babar gives up the mantle of captaincy at a time when he has been under severe criticism, especially after Pakistan failed in the Asia Cup and then continued the same performance in the World Cup earlier — getting knocked out before the semis.
