CHARLIZE THERON QUOTES NELSON MANDELA
Appearing in her capacity as the United Nations Ambassador of Peace, Charlize Theron recited a passage from a speech of the late South African president, Nelson Mandela.
Addressing the Winter Olympics participants, the Oscar-winning actress said: “Athletes, spectators from every corner of the world, this is a message of peace by my beloved countryman Nelson Mandela.”
“Peace is not just the absence of conflict. Peace is the creation of an environment where all can flourish. Regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, class, caste, or any other social markers of difference.”
“Today, this message seems more relevant than ever”.
She continued: “So let these Games be more than just sport. Let them be a reminder of our common humanity, our respect for one another, and a resounding call for peace everywhere.”
Charlize’s speech was a recital of Mandela’s 2004 speech from the Global Convention on Peace and Nonviolence in New Delhi, India. Coincidentally, it is also the same year Charlize won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Monster.
